The Constanties
Often described as a cross between Fugazi and Bruce Springsteen, The Constantines are an inventive Canadian rock band who are getting better with each release. Both albums "The Constantines" and "Shine a Light" are superb.
Try: Shine a Light, Sub-domestic, National Hum
The Wrens
Makers of two of my most favourite albums of recent years, Secaucaus and The Meadowlands. Both absolutely phenomenal indie rock. I absolutely cannot recommend this band enough.
Try: Happy, This Boy is Exhausted, Yellow Number 3, 'Surprise, Honeycomb', She Sends Kisses
Sufjan Stevens
Up-and-coming artist combining guitar pop, folk and ethereal sounds to create an album bristling with energy and fantastic lyrics. His most recent album is dedicated to his home state of Michigan, and he plans to make another 49 accompanying albums (!!!). Crazy guy, but truly inspiring music.
Try: 'For The Windows In Paradise, For The Fatherless In Ypsilanti', 'The Upper Peninsula', 'Vito's Ordination Song', 'Holland'

I was up in Cheshire for the New England Music Festival (where I played cello twice as much as I SLEPT), and our host family (who were the best EVAR) had very...ecclectic music tastes. I got a copy of the CD of a band I'd never heard before but really liked, Amici. Supposedly it's really big in europe? It's like opera rock, and fuckin awesome.

If you are looking for new band to listen to try the website Music Plasma just enter the name of a band you like and it shows a web of other bands with similar styles that you may also like.
