Lots of people call The Cure gothic. Would someone please try to reconcile this with the ska genius of The Love Cats?

And Just Like Heaven et al. are much more like electronica-tinged '80s rock/pop than gothic - I've yet to find a single example of The Cure's alleged gothicness.

It's fair enough from an outsider's perspective, like when people call the Beastie Boys rap only (wrong) or Jamiroquai funk only (wrong again).

They have several famous songs that are anything but. By contrast all of Beastie Boys' famous songs are rap/hip-hop and all of Jamiroquai's are funk(ish).

Fight For Your Right, the most famous Beastie Boys song by a long way, is rap? Nope. Deeper Underground is funk? Nah, not really.

Well, not quite, but there's very little melody to the vocals... which is sort of rapping (or being a Red Hot Chilli Pepper ) Deeper Underground is funk? Nah, not really. Not one of their most famous songs - Cosmic Girl and Virtual Insanity are their onyl really well known songs (plus whatever their latest single happens to be at the time - invariably pop-friendly funk-esqueness).

Cosmic Girl, Virtual Insanity, Canned Heat, Little L and Deeper Underground are genuinely famous songs of theirs. I think there's even more than that, but Deeper Underground was even the lead song on a soundtrack - that's famous.

Jamiroquai are generally known as a funk/rock band, which is fair of their single output.

It's more grungey than anything else. Rock's the nearest broad category, though.
